Overview

The Personal and Professional Lives of Muslim Religious Leaders in North America

February 5th, 2024

Our imams lead us in prayer, teach us our religion, officiate our marriages, preside over our final rites, and so much more. These religious leaders provide invaluable service to our communities, paving the way for the success of generations to come. But how well do you know your imam, or other religious leaders, in your community? What do they love about their job? What challenges do they face? How can each of us help them thrive?

We surveyed 205 religious leaders in 2022, probing the demographics, job responsibilities, job satisfaction, finances, family life, mental health and well-being, and other aspects of personal and professional experiences of religious leaders in the United States and Canada. This report presents an analysis of the findings and recommendations for Muslim community builders — you — on how we can work collectively to support our religious leaders, strengthen our institutions, and safeguard our masajid from becoming places with “beautiful walls and empty halls”.
