Congratulations to 2018 Malcolm X Vanguards of Justice Scholarship Awardees

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research announced the first ever recipients of the Malcolm X Vanguards of Justice Scholarship. The scholarship recognizes members that made outstanding contributions to their community through service inspired by the legacy of a champion of social justice, El Hajj Malik Shabbaz Malcolm X.
The awardees serve as role models who strive to establish social justice, work for positive change in their community, and make the world a better place by contributing expertise where it is needed locally. Each recipient will receive $2,000 to put towards their studies or student debt. Applicants were required to be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies or be a graduate with student debt, maintain a 3.0 GPA or above, and display commitment to community service and social justice.

Ayatullah Muhammad

BA in Political Science, University of Houston
Ayatullah is a member of the Black Student Union serving on the Community Service chair, Pro-Palestine BDS activist, and Student Justice for Palestine board member.

Rachel Azzaam

BA in Economics, Penn State University
Rachel serves as a Scout Leader to Alimah Muslim and is also involved with Early Head Start Parent Policy Council, Homeless Shelter Feedings, and the Disaster Action Team American Red Cross

MA candidate of Arts in Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education
Sarah is a Youth Leader and Organizer for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Co-founder of the Young Muslim Collective and the Qalanjo Project.

BA in Interior Design, Marymount University
Ahmed is a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and works closely with disenfranchised families to create homes tailored to their needs.

Fatma Elzahra AbdelRahman

BA in African American Studies and minoring in Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of California, Los Angeles while also pursuing Islamic Studies from The Institute of Knowledge
Fatma is a recipient for the Champion of Social Justice award from CAIR and volunteers with Halal Project a non-profit organization providing necessities to the underprivileged community.

Faryal Khatri

MA candidate of Philanthropic Studies, Indiana University
Faryal serves on the Executive Committees of the Board of Directors for the Center of Interfaith Cooperation (CIC) and Muslim Alliance of Indiana (MAI)
She aspires to help American Muslim institutions reclaim their narrative and highlight the invaluable contributions of American Muslims to civil society.
Congratulations to the winners of this years scholarship who will carry Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research mission to inspire, instill conviction, and reclaim our narrative.
