Shayba ibn Uthman (ra): The Assassin the Prophet ﷺ Called Closer | The Firsts

He marched in the Prophet’s ﷺ army, waiting for his chance to kill him.

Shayba ibn Uthman (ra) lost his father, his uncle and his cousins in a single day at Uhud. It is narrated that at Hunayn, when the Muslim lines broke and people fled, he found himself right behind the Prophet ﷺ with nothing between them but his sword. What happened next turned the man who came for revenge into one reported to have stood his ground beside the Prophet ﷺ. He later became a keeper of the Ka’bah, and his family holds its keys to this day.

Grief can harden into a hatred with every reason behind it. The Prophet ﷺ answered this one with a hand on the chest instead of a sword, then told Shaybah that Allah had intended better for him than he had intended for himself.

00:00Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh everyone. Welcome back to the first.
00:10Bismillah wa alhamdulillah wa assalatu wa assalamu ala rasulillah wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa man wala. So, last time we talked about Uthman ibn Talha. Today we're going to talk about his cousin. But
00:21before I get there, what I want to say is this particular biography is going to be a bridge to the next genre of stories in which we're going to look at people who were touched by the Prophet
00:34Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and healed. And there are different types of healing. There is healing from hate and there's healing from wound and injury. And you know, the next set of biographies that we're going to cover are truly beautiful stories of people who were healed by the Prophet
00:47Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in terms of their wounds, in terms of their injuries, or whatever it may be when they were serving alongside the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. And perhaps we'll come back to people that were healed of their hate as well. But this particular
01:01biography kind of serves in between the redemption stories and the being touched by the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and being healed by his blessed hand Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. And
01:11we're speaking about the first cousin of Uthman ibn Talha. His name is Shaybah ibn Uthman ibn
01:20Abu Talha. So again, remember Uthman ibn Talha ibn Abu Talha was named after his uncle Uthman ibn
01:29Abu Talha. Uthman ibn Talha's father was killed in Uhud and his uncle was killed in Uhud as well. And so Shaybah is the son of his uncle Uthman ibn Abu Talha. And so he's his first cousin,
01:44and so everything that we spoke about in terms of the tribe of Bani Abd al-Dar and how sacred their position was or how noble they were in the times of Jahiliyyah, all of that applies to Shaybah
01:56as well. I don't need to repeat that. I simply take you back to Uhud where Shaybah saw his father Uthman falling, he saw his uncle Talha ibn Abu Talha fall, and he saw all of his first cousins
02:10slain one after the other, all holding the banner of Quraysh. And what this did to Shaybah was a little bit different than what it did to Uthman ibn Talha. You see Uthman ibn Talha actually
02:22preceded the Fath. He preceded the conquest and he came to the Prophet ﷺ to embrace Islam. Shaybah deeply resented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He hated him and he was waiting for the moment of
02:36revenge. So he had a very similar type of disposition to Sulafa, the mother of Uthman, where all he wanted was revenge against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And so let's sort of
02:49tell the story from his perspective. He is there at the day of the conquest of Mecca.
02:57And when the Prophet ﷺ comes to the Ka'bah and he hands the keys to Uthman ibn Talha, in some narrations he's handing it to both Uthman and his cousin Shaybah. Now Shaybah was younger
03:11than Uthman, but when he said to them, Banu Talha, he's referring to their entire tribe. And so Shaybah is included in that custodianship of the Ka'bah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
03:25applied. So you would think now that this softens the heart. You would think that like his cousin Uthman, iman has settled into his heart and he's ready to let bygones be bygones and particularly
03:35to repent from the great harm of having opposed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. But Shaybah takes an entirely different path, which shows you the complexities of human beings. Shaybah still,
03:48after having embraced Islam, wants to kill the Prophet ﷺ. So he says that lamma kana aam al-fath dakhal rasulullah ﷺ makkah that when the Fath happened,
04:01the Prophet ﷺ entered Mecca, wa ghaza hunaynan and he went out in battle in Hunayn. And he said,
04:08so I said, asir maá quraysh ila hawazin faasa in ikhtaslau an asib min muhammadin ﷺ gharrah. He said that, I said, let me go out with Quraysh to fight the Hawazin in these other battles.
04:22And perhaps when the battle gets intense, I will catch Muhammad ﷺ off guard. So basically, he still wants to assassinate the Prophet ﷺ. He still has so much anger and resentment in his
04:34heart because of the death of his father, the death of his uncle, and the death of his first cousins. So he said that I was saying to myself al-yawm adrak tha'ri min muhammadin ﷺ Today,
04:47I will take my revenge from Muhammad ﷺ. So you imagine, he's pretending to be amongst the Muslims at this point. His cousin is fully bought in and the Prophet ﷺ forgave him and honored him
04:59and still let him hold the keys of the Ka'bah. And he's out fighting alongside the Prophet ﷺ. But in his mind and his heart was that he wants to betray the Prophet ﷺ and kill him. So he said
05:12that at some point within the battle, when it got rough and when it got crazy, he said that I found myself in a situation and we know that this battle of Hunayn was
05:23very hectic. The battle with the Hawazin was very hectic. Allah ﷻ talks about in the Qur'an where the Muslims were ambushed and while they were great in number, the tactics of the Bedouins and attacking them from different sides caused people to flee from the side of the Prophet ﷺ.
05:38So he says, I found myself close to the Prophet ﷺ and I got behind him and the only thing left
05:46between me and him was my sword, right? So I was about to stab him right at that moment.
05:55Then suddenly just as I was about to attack the Prophet ﷺ, this blaze of fire like lightning
06:09struck right between us and it was so powerful. I thought it was going to burn me alive. So he said, I put my hand on my eyes and I walked back from the Prophet ﷺ,
06:23right? Like imagine the shock, right? He was about to stab the Prophet ﷺ and then lightning strikes between him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, so the Prophet ﷺ turned around to me
06:37and he said, Ya Shaybah, come close to me. So he said, so I went close to him.
06:48He said, the Prophet ﷺ put his hand on my chest and he said, Allahumma adhib anhu ash-shaytan. Oh Allah, do away with his Shaytan. Oh Allah, remove the Shaytan from him.
07:03And Shaybah, he says, so I looked up at him.
07:09And he was more beloved to me at that moment than my hearing, my sight, and my heart.
07:21And he said to me, Ya Shaybah, fight against the enemy, fight against the disbelievers. SubhanAllah, he was on his way to kill the Prophet ﷺ. He was right about to stab the
07:32Prophet ﷺ because of the hatred and resentment he had in his heart. The Prophet ﷺ, in his mercy, did not punish him for that and kill him at that moment. Instead, the Prophet ﷺ said,
07:43come here, put his hand on his heart, said, do away with his Shaytan. And now Shaybah says, I loved him instantly more than my hearing, more than my sight, more than my heart.
07:55And SubhanAllah, because of that, Shaybah becomes one of those who not only fights alongside the Prophet ﷺ, but he's one of those who showed thabt, who showed firmness with the Prophet ﷺ
08:07in Hunayn, when most people fled. And the Prophet ﷺ says to him, after all is said and done,
08:19he said, al-hamdu lillahi alladhi arada laka khayr mimmá aradta li nafsika. All praise is due to Allah, who intended for you better than what you intended for yourself. SubhanAllah, sometimes Allah ﷻ intends for you better than what you intend for yourself. And of course, Allah ﷻ's plan is always better than our plan. SubhanAllah, in one moment,
08:34the man went from wanting to kill the Prophet ﷺ to being willing to die for the Prophet ﷺ. And Shaybah at that point became such a devout lover of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
08:48And so the Prophet ﷺ passes away and Uthman ibn Talha and Shaybah are both, may Allah be pleased with them, custodians of the Ka'bah. And then when Uthman ibn Talha passes away, Shaybah
09:02becomes the sole custodian of the Ka'bah. So I want you to imagine going to Mecca and Shaybah is the one that opens and locks the doors of the Ka'bah for worship and for the visits. He's the
09:15one that maintains its interior. He's the one that washes it. He's the one that guards its sacred relics. He's the one that oversees the covering of the Ka'bah, the kiswa of the Ka'bah throughout
09:27the Khilafahs of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali and beyond. He is the one who is overseeing that draping of the Ka'bah. And he has one famous hadith. In fact, there's only one hadith of him
09:39in Sahih al-Bukhari. And it's a famous hadith in Kitab al-I'tisam, the book of holding tight to the Qur'an and the Sunnah. And the hadith is from Abu Wa'il. He says, I sat with Shaybah
09:51in al-Masjid al-Haram. Imagine the custodian of the Ka'bah and you are now 40 or 50 years after the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and you're sitting next to the man who's in charge of the Ka'bah.
10:02And he said, I sat next to Shaybah in al-Masjid al-Haram. And Shaybah looked at me and he said, you know, Umar ibn al-Khattab radiallahu ta'ala anhu once sat next to me in the same way that you
10:13were sitting next to me. And Umar radiallahu ta'ala anhu said to me that I feel like distributing
10:19all of the gold and the silver that is inside this masjid, right? The yellow, which is the gold
10:31and the white, which is the silver. Umar radiallahu ta'ala anhu said, I feel like spending the treasures of the Ka'bah amongst the Muslims. And what was Umar radiallahu ta'ala anhu referring to? He meant that
10:42there are certain treasures in the Ka'bah. People would come and they would leave their precious things attached to the Ka'bah. And he felt like it's more befitting to spend that. He didn't want
10:53it for himself. He wanted to spend it in the path of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And Shaybah said, I said to Umar ibn al-Khattab radiallahu ta'ala anhu that you can't do that. Umar radiallahu anhu said,
11:08why? He said, because he said, I said to Umar radiallahu anhu, because your two companions did not do that. Meaning the
11:20Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam did not take the relics of the Ka'bah, the precious metals of the Ka'bah and spend them fi sabili-llah. Nor did Abu Bakr radiallahu ta'ala anhu and Umar radiallahu
11:30ta'ala anhu. He responded and he said, you're right. These are the two persons that one must follow. So Umar radiallahu ta'ala anhu was of course, waqifun inda kitab Allah. He would always stop at the book of Allah when he was reminded. Was reminded by Shaybah radiallahu anhu, who was less
11:45than him, that hold on to the sunnah of the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam and Abu Bakr radiallahu ta'ala anhu who preceded you. And Umar radiallahu ta'ala anhu immediately restrained himself and
11:55said, you're right. And this is the one hadith of Shaybah in al-Bukhari radiallahu ta'ala anhu. And al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah, he points out that the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam himself
12:05had considered spending these precious things that were attached to the Ka'bah. Now, just like the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam did not restore the Ka'bah to its original shape. As he told Aisha radiallahu
12:16ta'ala anhu that the Ka'bah used to be a rectangle. But when Quraysh decided to rebuild the Ka'bah, they said don't use any of the money from gambling or alcohol or things that are impure. And so they
12:28ran out of money. And so they built the Ka'bah in that cube structure. And that's where you have the semicircle. And the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam when he was asked, why doesn't he just restore it? He said to Aisha radiallahu ta'ala anhu that they're too close to Islam. They're
12:42too new to Islam. So the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam did not want to disrupt the harmony of these people that just became Muslim. And in one of the narrations, the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam said,
12:59wa law la hada qawmuhu hadithun min kufri maa ahalltu wa laa a'addtu min kunuz baayin. And had your people not been recent in Islam from the days of ignorance, then I would have spent the
13:11treasures of the Ka'bah in the cause of Allah. But he left them salallahu alaihi wa sallam and Shaybah radiallahu anhu reminded Umar radiallahu anhu to leave them as the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam left them.
13:22And he continued radiallahu ta'ala anhu to take care of the Ka'bah for decades after the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam. And not only that, when Sayyidina Uthman radiallahu ta'ala anhu was besieged
13:35in Medina, and the Hajjaj were gathered in Mecca in the year 35. And they could not agree upon themselves as to who would lead the salah, who would lead them in prayer. It was unanimously
13:47agreed that Shaybah ibn Uthman would lead the Hajj that day. And that year because Shaybah was the trusted custodian of the Ka'bah radiallahu ta'ala anhu. And he held the custodianship of the Ka'bah
14:01until his death. And it has been passed down the keys of the Ka'bah until today. And those that hold the Ka'bah are known as ash-Shaybiyyun, Banu Shaybah, who have been entrusted with the key and
14:11the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam said, no one will take it from you except for an oppressor. RadiAllahu ta'ala anhu. Once again, dear brothers and sisters, when you see a story of redemption like this, and again, we're going to phase into now people who were healed by the touch of the
14:23Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam, not from their hate, but from their wounds as they were serving alongside him salallahu alaihi wa sallam. Ask yourself how Allah azawajal took these people
14:34to opposite trajectories. And ask yourself, where is your unique contribution? If your heart absorbs the love of Allah and the Messenger salallahu alaihi wa sallam, may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
14:43allow us to be amongst those that are custodians of the message that we have inherited from our
